In Tribute for a Wounded City - Seeking Healing by Cookie Torreah Washington (detail)
This quilt was made after the murders of the Emanuel 9 at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, SC. I created a tribute art exhibit in a pop-up gallery in the city. I knew many of the fallen, and my heart was torn in two. I created my own vision of Black Jesus "Descent from the Cross" floating over the Holy City with Mother Emanuel Church off to the side. Hateful words are dropping into the Cooper River as we call out for racism to be erased from all our hearts.
